Vermicomposting: Worms Turn Kitchen Trash into Garden Treasure
Saturday, December 1st, 2018
10 AM – 12 PM
Worms are among the garden’s hardest workers. Harness their natural ability to turn food scraps into plant food by vermicomposting. In this clinic, you will see how easy vermicomposting can be for practically everyone. Come learn about which worms are the best to use for composting, how to set up a worm bin, which other critters share the bin, which foods are healthy for worms and which foods to avoid, when and how to harvest your castings, how to use your castings to grow healthy plants indoors and out, and how to troubleshoot potential problems. Presented by Kelly Torikai and Nancy Kruberg.
Co-Presenter Kelly Torikai: Kelly is a Master Gardener and a Sustainability Academy Master Composter who turned her trepidation about handling a box full of worms and other critters into fascination and amazement in their collective ability to turn food scraps into a great soil amendment. Kelly particularly appreciates the role vermicomposting can play in organic gardening and sustainability.
Co-Presenter Nancy Kruberg: Nancy is a Master Gardener and a Sustainability Academy Master Composter who is also working toward her Soil Life Consultant Certification with Dr. Elaine Ingham at Soil Foodweb Inc. Nancy is passionate about soil, compost, vermicompost, microbes and growing food.
