WHAT: A half-day lecture and hands-on workshop on the subject of sustainable fashion, with a focus on waste. The 4Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rot) will be discussed specifically as they relate to fashion and textiles.
WHY: The purpose of the workshop is to increase understanding of the textile problem and develop creative solutions together. Textile waste still accounts for roughly 5% or 1.2M tons of all materials going to landfill in California and is increasing. This is still a relatively new frontier in both the fashion industry and the sustainability field. As a result there is great need for collaborative innovation by professionals from both communities as well as the general public.
Participants in the hands-on portion* will have access to sewing machines and sewing tools but are encouraged to bring their own. Salvaged fabric and clothing will be provided. Sewing skills a plus but not required. No-sew projects will be presented and materials made available.
*Note: The hands-on portion of the workshop is limited to the first 20 registrants.
