Beverage Container Recycling
Changes to CRV Law January 1, 2024
Starting January 1, 2024, California’s Beverage Container Recycling Program adds new beverages and new containers.
ALL ELIGIBLE CONTAINERS
Only beverage containers purchased in California can be redeemed for a refund. New additions may not have CRV labels until July 1, 2025.
The container examples below are not the only eligible containers nor an endorsement of specific products.
CRV Payments
Customers can request to be paid by count for up to 50 CRV beverage containers of each material type (50 glass, 50 aluminum, 50 plastic).
- If recycling more than 50 containers of any one material type, the decision to pay by count or weight is determined by the recycling center operator.
- Make sure your containers are whole and free of contaminants such as dirt, excessive liquid or other foreign substances. If you are being paid by weight, make sure the load contains only eligible CRV beverage containers.
As a matter of business efficiency, Bottle Bill regulations allow CRV recyclers to make weight-based payments beyond the 50-count threshold based on per pound payment rates established by CalRecycle.
- These rates are determined through ongoing CalRecycle surveys that account for different weights of beverage containers.
- The below CRV per pound rates are periodically adjusted.
California Redemption Value (CRV) is 5 cents for each beverage container less than 24 ounces and 10 cents for each container 24 ounces or greater.
All materials must be sorted before arriving and free of debris, liquid, or other foreign substances. No sorting allowed on property.
Additional notes: California driver’s license or vehicle license plate number is required for transactions over $100.
